It is a form of performance that emerged in the 1960s, dissolving the boundary between performer and audience.
The term was introduced by Allan Kaprow, who brought art out of galleries and into everyday life.

It is not a staged event with a script —
it is a living situation that unfolds in real time through presence, action, and interaction.
  • There are no spectators — only participants.
  • Meaning is not predefined; it emerges in the process.
  • It cannot be repeated. It cannot be reproduced.
  • It exists only in the moment it happens.
